Political Affairs Section
The political Affairs Section of the Embassy is led by the Deputy Chief of Mission. Its core mission is to maintain and enhance close political cooperation with the Canadian government, the embassies and other relevant entities on issues pertaining to Afghanistan at both bilateral and multilateral levels. The section’s main duties and responsibilities involve managing the process of maintaining bilateral relations, coordinating high-level bilateral and multilateral meetings between the Afghan and the Canadian officials and delegations. It follows and makes analysis of domestic and Canadian policies and discussions relevant to Afghanistan in both, government and non-governmental arenas, including academia, media, think tanks and other relevant institutions. It facilitates relevant communication between Kabul and the Embassy with the Global Affairs Canada and other Canadian ministries, the Parliament, and relevant political institutions. This section also facilitates bilateral political consultations as well as discussions and follow-ups on the Canadian support to the security sector in Afghanistan.
The section participates in various conferences and events related to Afghanistan and/or the region and briefs the participants on latest political and security developments in Afghanistan.
Development Cooperation, Trade and Investment
This section is mandated to promote development cooperation as well as trade and investment between the two countries. The Economic Counselor and the Commercial Attaché of the Embassy, in close coordination with each other, lead this section. The section is responsible for facilitating all bilateral and multilateral efforts related to economic cooperation between the two countries including those between the governments and private sector institutions of the two counties.
The section also tries to connect traders and investors from both countries including through organizing/co-organizing business forums, roadshows, matchmaking events and workshops as well as through online information sharing.
The section participates in various events related to bilateral and multilateral development cooperation, trade and investment and prepares relevant status reports and analysis.
Consular Section
The Consular Section provides various consular services related to visa, passport, entry permit, marriage certificate, birth certificate, identification certificate, inheritance certificate, power of attorney, national identification (Tazkera). The section maintains contacts and coordination with various Afghan government agencies, private institutions, and individuals regarding immigration and legal matters pertaining to Afghan citizens. It also coordinates efforts with two Consulates General of the country located in Toronto and Vancouver as well as with the Consulate General in New York – U.S. for the issuance of passports. This section also assists the Cultural and Social Affairs Section of the Embassy with issues related to the Afghan diaspora, friends of Afghanistan in Canada and relevant cultural activities in Canada.
Cultural and Social Affairs Section
The Cultural and Social Affairs Section of the Embassy maintains and promotes the cultural ties between Afghanistan and Canada. It is responsible for all cultural diplomacy efforts including cultural shows, art and handicraft exhibitions, Afghan musical and theatre performances, and other social and cultural activities.
This section also actively collaborates with the Afghan-Canadian community, organizations, and institutions and participates in conferences, gatherings, scientific seminars, symposiums and social events held by the Afghan – Canadian institutions as well as by friends of Afghanistan in Canada.
Public Relations Section
This section serves as a point of contact between the Embassy and Canadian and foreign media and journalists seeking information about Afghanistan. The section is responsible for all the media related tasks such as publications, maintaining the website and social media; preparing news bulletins; organizing press conferences, and managing interviews and other media engagements for the Embassy. The section partners with media entities and journalists and ensures that they get the most up-to-date, and accurate information about Afghanistan, Canadian engagement in Afghanistan, and the embassy’s activities. It also facilitates timely access to the Ambassador and Embassy staff for comments and opinions on issues of importance for media. Media advisories and press releases are provided to inform the press and media about notable appearances by the Ambassador and visiting dignitaries, as well as significant reform achievements and untold stories of progress in the country.
Administrative and Finance Section
The Administrative and Finance Section manages the embassy’s finance and administrative affairs as per the relevant laws and procedures. This section facilitates the embassy’s overall day-to-day operations and provides needed support to all other sections. Main duties and responsibilities of the section include managing accounts, human resources, administrative tasks, correspondences, and logistics.
