On May 04, 2026, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh attended the groundbreaking ceremony marking the launch of the construction phase of the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan in Ottawa.
The event brought together participants from the government, the veterans’ community and organizations, youth representatives, CAF personnel, and members of the diplomatic community.
On this occasion, Ambassador Soroosh wrote on X that “this monument will carry profound meaning for generations to come, serving as a lasting tribute to the brave Canadian women and men who served in Afghanistan, and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice alongside courageous Afghan forces in defence of our shared values. Their sacrifices represent a shared legacy grounded in the principles that continue to inspire our collective efforts to support the rights and aspirations of the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls.”
He added that “we remain deeply grateful to the Government of Canada and to all friends of Afghanistan in Canada for their enduring friendship and partnership with the Afghan people, as well as for their continued humanitarian assistance and steadfast advocacy particularly for women and girls.”
