Ottawa- April 23, 2020

The Embassy of Afghanistan will be closed on Friday, April 24, 2020 on the occasion of the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan, as well as on Monday, April 27, 2020 on the occasion of the Victory Day in Afghanistan.

The Embassy's working hours during the Holy Month of Ramadan will be from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Due to continued COVID-19-related restrictions, the consular services of the Embassy will remain limited to emergency issues.

Ambassador Hassan Soroosh and the Honorable Francesco Sorbara, Member of Parliament and Chair of the Canada-Afghanistan Parliamentary Friendship Group held a virtual meeting this afternoon. 


They discussed the COVID-19 situation in Afghanistan and Canada as well as the ongoing bilateral cooperation and international efforts in response to COVID-19. 
Ambassador Soroosh expressed his appreciation for the ongoing support to COVID-19 response efforts in Afghanistan by Canada including through multilateral platforms. 

Mr. Sayed Mujtaba Ahmadi, Deputy Chief of Mission and Mr. Azim Wardak, Economic Counselor of the Embassy were also present in this virtual meeting.

Ambassador Adela Raz, Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations has been appointed, along with the Permanent Representative of Croatia, as the co-coordinator of COVID-19-related initiatives for the UN General Assembly. 


We wish Ambassador Raz every success under this role at a time when the world needs collective and coordinated action more than ever before.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan has expressed “its deepest condolences to the government and people of Canada over the lives lost as a result of tragic shooting attack in Nova Scotia”. 
Earlier yesterday, Ambassador Soroosh also extended his “deepest condolences to the families & friends of the victims” and wished “those who were injured a speedy and full recovery.”

Ottawa- April 18, 2020

Ambassador Hassan Soroosh and Dr. Mahmoud Eboo, the AKDN Diplomatic Representative to Canada held a phone conversation on Friday, April 17, 2020. They discussed the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation in Afghanistan and exchanged views on the Afghan national response plan, the AKDN global response to COVID-19 as well as the ongoing and future support to COVID-19 response efforts in Afghanistan by Canada and AKDN.

Canada, Ukraine, Sweden, Afghanistan and the United Kingdom, members of the International Coordination and Response Group for the victims of Flight PS752, today issued the following statement:
 
“Today marks 100 days since the tragedy of Ukrainian International Airlines Flight PS752: 176 people lost their lives unnecessarily when their plane was brought down by a surface-to-air missile in Tehran, Iran, on January 8. Our thoughts continue to be with their families.
 
“The members of the coordination group would like to take this opportunity to reassure the families and loved ones of the victims that our group of ministers continue to work together to advocate for full accountability, transparency, justice, compensation, and a full, independent and transparent investigation, to help families seek closure as they continue to grieve.”

Ambassador Hassan Soroosh joined other Afghan heads of mission in North America in a video conference led by H.E. Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan. Minister Atmar briefed the participants about Afghanistan’s measures in response to COVID-19 and discussed with them the ongoing bilateral and multilateral cooperation in this area. Minister Atmar also spoke about the priorities and ongoing efforts under the peace process.

Message On World Health Day

On World Health Day, we salute healthcare workers in Afghanistan, Canada and around the world who serve selflessly in the frontline of the global battle against COVID-19 and pay tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our health and well-being during this challenging time. Let’s honor their service and sacrifice by following all public health and safety measures including social distancing and staying at home.

Kabul- April 5, 2020

During a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mohammad Hanif Atmar was introduced as the Designate and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, today afternoon. The occasion was attended by the members of the National Assembly, high-ranking government officials, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and political leaders.

The ceremony began with the recitation of verses of the Holy Quran, following which Mohammad Haroon Chakhansuri, Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, congratulated  H.E. Atmar on his nomination for the post and wished him best of luck.
Subsequently, H.E. Atmar discussed his policy priorities for the Ministry, including improving the capacity of the Ministry in line with contemporary diplomatic standards, expanding, consolidating and strengthening Afghanistan's diplomatic relations with countries in the region and the world in order to create regional and international consensus to achieve peace, the upholding of the Republic's system, and a review of the country's foreign policy.

Recalling the services of the leadership, staff and diplomats of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the past years, Minister Atmar stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to achieving the above priorities and make sure that post peace Afghanistan is not going back to the crisis and instability, and no effort will be spared in this regard.

The ceremony ended with a prayer for peace and stability in the country and the safety of the Afghan people facing the global health crisis caused by COVID-19

Ambassador Hassan Soroosh and Mr. David Hartman, Director General of the South Asia Bureau, Global Affairs Canada held a telemeeting on Friday, April 03, 2020. They discussed the ongoing COVID-19 response efforts in Canada and Afghanistan as well as the bilateral and multilateral cooperation in response to COVID-19.

Ms. Diane Harper, Executive Director of the South Asia Bureau and Mr. Sayed Mujtaba Ahmadi, Deputy Chief of Mission also attended the telemeeting.

The telemeeting was a follow-up to the teleconference on COVID-19 co-organized recently by the Global Affairs Canada and the Embassy of the Philippines in Ottawa to discuss Canada’s measures in response to COVID-19 as well as the relevant national and international efforts in the Asia-Pacific region.
