Ottawa- March 1, 2020

The Canada Afghanistan Business Council hosted a dinner program this evening in honor of the Afghan delegation visiting Toronto for PDAC 2020. During the program, the participants discussed various aspects of trade and investment between Afghanistan and Canada. The participants stressed the importance of building connections and partnerships between the business communities of the two countries including through reciprocal trade missions.

On the first day of PDAC 2020 in Toronto, the Afghan delegation opened its booth in the Trade Show and hosted a side event on investment opportunities in Afghanistan’s mining sector and exploration services with remarks and presentations by H.E. Dr. Humayon Qayoumi, Acting Minister of Finance and Chief Advisor to the President; H.E. Enayatullah Momand, Acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP); Ambassador Hassan Soroosh; Deputy Minister Zadran and Mr. Mirkhail from MoMP followed by a Q & A session.

H.E. Dr. Mohammad Humayon Qayoumi, Acting Minister of Finance and Chief Advisor to the President of Afghanistan paid a visit to the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat and met with Dr. Mahmoud Eboo, AKDN Diplomatic Representative for Canada and Madam Sheherazade Hirji, AKDN Ambassador for Afghanistan. They discussed ongoing and future cooperation between AKDN and the government of Afghanistan in various areas.


Minister Qayoumi also visited the Global Center for Pluralism and attended a dinner hosted by Madam Meredith Preston McGhie, Secretary-General of the Center in honor of his visit to Ottawa. The dinner was attended by high-level officials from the Center, Global Affairs Canada, AKDN, Ambassador Soroosh and Ambassador of Norway to Canada. During the dinner, the participants discussed various aspects of peace and development in Afghanistan including women’s empowerment as well as future collaboration between the Center and the relevant institutions in Afghanistan. DCM Ahmadi, Counselor Wardak and Director-General Ahmadzai from the Ministry of Finance also accompanied the Minister to these meetings.

H.E. Dr. Mohammad Humayon Qayoumi, Acting Minister of Finance and Chief Advisor to the President of Afghanistan met this afternoon with H.E. Christopher MacLennan, Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. They discussed the ongoing development cooperation, bilateral trade and investment as well as future priorities and long-term partnership between the two countries. Minister Qayoumi expressed his gratitude for Canada’s continued support to development, peace and security in Afghanistan. He outlined Afghanistan’s self-reliance strategy and reform agenda and highlighted the progress made in this regard over the past few years. Assistant Deputy Minister Paul Thoppil, Ambassador Soroosh, Director General Hartman of the South Asia Bureau and Deputy Chief of Mission Ahmadi were also present in the meeting.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our friends from the Iranian community who visited the Embassy yesterday to express their sympathy on the tragic loss of passengers from Afghanistan who were among the victims of Ukraine Airlines flight PS752 crash in Iran.
We are deeply touched by the beautiful messages and kind words reflected in the book of condolences that was presented to the Embassy.
It was indeed a global tragedy and we grieve the loss of so many people from Canada, Iran, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Sweden and UK. We extend our profound condolences to all affected nations and to the families of victims.
