The government of Afghanistan remains committed to press and media freedom which is essential for making informed decisions enabling citizens to actively engage in the community around them.

Ambassador Hassan Soroosh spoke at a virtual program hosted by the Toronto-based Afghan Network for Social Services to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Other speakers included the Honorable MP Salma Zahid, the Honorable Commissioner Rahima Zarifi from the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan as well as a number of human rights activists and experts from Afghanistan, Canada and the United States.
Ambassador Soroosh spoke about the overall efforts and achievements in the areas of women’s empowerment and women’s rights in Afghanistan and conveyed the people and government of Afghanistan’s appreciation for Canada’s continued assistance to important and promising areas of women’s empowerment, health and education in Afghanistan. Ambassador Soroosh also thanked all the Canadian friends of Afghanistan within the parliament and civil society as well as the Afghan Canadian community for their continued commitment to advocating for women’s empowerment in Afghanistan.

Ambassador Hassan Soroosh met virtually with H.E. Dr. Melita Gabric, Ambassador of the European Union to Canada.
The two sides discussed COVID-19 situation; the ongoing peace process in Afghanistan, cooperation between Afghanistan and the European Union; and future collaboration between the two missions. They stressed the importance of preserving the hard-won gains of the past two decades in Afghanistan including in the areas of human rights and women’s empowerment.
Ambassador Soroosh expressed the people and government of Afghanistan’s appreciation for EU’s continued commitment to peace and development efforts in Afghanistan.
The Embassy of Afghanistan will be closed on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 on the occasion of the Victory Day in Afghanistan.

Congratulations to the Canadian Federation of University Women and partners for successfully concluding the "WALK TO KABUL" advocacy campaign. The participants made great efforts by walking, running, skiing, and cycling the total distance that it would take to get from Ottawa to Kabul in support of Afghan women's rights in the ongoing peace process. The Embassy thanks all the Canadian friends who joined the campaign in solidarity with Afghan women.
The campaign was an important initiative to encourage International and Canadian support for Afghan women at this critical moment. The Afghan government remains committed to protecting Afghan women's rights and the hard-won gains of the past two decades in the areas of women’s rights and women’s empowerment in Afghanistan.
