OTTAWA: DECEMBER 6, 2023
On December 06, 2023, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh participated and spoke in an event on women’s rights in Afghanistan which was organized by the Afghan Women Parliamentarians and Leaders Network (AWPLN) in Ottawa.
Ambassador Soroosh spoke about the tragic situation of women and girls in Afghanistan and referred to the increasing calls both nationally and internationally for the recognition and criminalization of gender apartheid in the case of Afghanistan.
Ambassador Soroosh stated that Afghan women and girls should be given the opportunity to participate in all decision-making processes that have an impact on their lives including in the international meetings on Afghanistan. Referring to the recent assessment conducted by the United Nations, he reiterated that Afghan women need to be given the opportunity to share their concerns and observations on this document and to be meaningfully involved in the relevant mechanisms and processes.
He also stressed the importance of greater international support for women’s rights activists and women-led initiatives inside Afghanistan.
Ambassador Soroosh expressed his gratefulness for the previous support provided by Canada as one of the largest donors to Afghanistan to many important areas including education, women’s empowerment, and health sector as well as for the ongoing resettlement, humanitarian and advocacy support for Afghanistan.
Other speakers and panelists included members of Parliament and high-ranking officials for the government of Canada, international activists, community leaders, former Afghan MPs and civil society activists from the Afghan diaspora community.
On December 07, 2023, the Embassy hosted a breakfast reception for the Toronto-based participants of the said event where Ambassador Soroosh thanked the AWPLN leadership and participants of the event for their continued commitment and engagement in support of Afghan women and girls.

Ambassador Hassan Soroosh hosted a farewell dinner recently in honor of H.E. Martin Harvey, High Commissioner of New Zealand to Canada and Mrs. Harvey, former President of the Heads of Mission Spouses Association (HOMSA) along with other great friends of Afghanistan, Honorable Andrew Leslie, former Member of Parliament, and his spouse, Mrs. Paris Jefferson; and Ms. Lisa Haley, President of the Diplomatic Hospitality Group.
Ambassador Soroosh thanked all of them for their continued friendship and commitment in support of the people of Afghanistan and wished High Commissioner Harvey and Mrs. Harvey all the best as they are leaving Ottawa this week.
OTTAWA: NOVEMBER 16, 2023
Ambassador Hassan Soroosh participated and spoke in the Afghanistan Earthquake Relief Event co-hosted by the Carleton University Afghan Student Association and a number of Ottawa-based organizations.
Ambassador Soroosh spoke about the tragic impact of the recent devastating earthquakes in Herat amidst a dire humanitarian situation and a human rights crisis in Afghanistan, and stressed the importance of sustained assistance at different levels under a comprehensive approach that includes winterization response and long-term recovery support for housing and livelihoods.
Ambassador Soroosh thanked the Afghan diaspora community and friends of Afghanistan including the co-organizers of the event for their sustained commitment and engagement in support of the people of Afghanistan and for their recent efforts in mobilizing fund for the families affected by Herat earthquakes.
Ambassador Soroosh also expressed his gratefulness to Canada for the ongoing humanitarian, resettlement and advocacy support for the people of Afghanistan.

Ambassador Hassan Soroosh attended this morning the National Remembrance Day Ceremony and placed a wreath on behalf of the people of Afghanistan and in honor of the Fallen.
On this occasion, we pay tribute to all those courageous men and women from Afghanistan and Canada who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our shared values.
Thank you, Canada, for being a consistent friend and partner for the people of Afghanistan and for the ongoing humanitarian, resettlement and advocacy support for Afghanistan.

ANNOUNCEMENT
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Consular Section in Ottawa will be closed on Monday November 13, 2023, in observance of the Remembrance Day.
Ambassador Hassan Soroosh participated virtually as a speaker in a seminar on the “ Role of Media in Preventing Further Isolation of Afghanistan” organized by the Fahim Dashty Foundation in Toronto, Canada.
Ambassador Soroosh spoke about the increasing restrictions on Afghan media under the Taliban and stated that: “Once a vibrant and flourishing sector under the Republic exemplified by the presence of over 500 media outlets in the country, the media sector today suffers tremendously under the Taliban’s repressive polices and practices.”
He further spoke about the role of Afghan media and journalists in highlighting the growing humanitarian needs, exposing human rights violations and voicing the aspirations of the people.
Ambassador Soroosh stressed the importance of greater support for media outlets in Afghanistan, the diaspora-led media outlets as well as the newcomer journalists within the Afghan diaspora community.
He also expressed his gratefulness to Canada for the previous support to many important areas including democratic process and media sector in Afghanistan as well as for the ongoing humanitarian, resettlement and advocacy efforts in support of the people of Afghanistan.

Earlier on X, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh expressed his gratefulness to Canada for "welcoming at least 40000 of our fellow Afghans under one of the world’s largest Afghan resettlement programs since August 2021" and for "the commitment to continue resettlement support for Afghanistan under different programs."
