Ambassador Hassan Soroosh participated and spoke in an event which was organized by the Ottawa Chapter of the Right to Learn Afghanistan to celebrate the International Day of the Girl and to showcase the Afghan culture and resilience of Afghan girls.
Ambassador Soroosh stated that “on this occasion, while we celebrate the strength and resilience of girls in Afghanistan, we also express our sorrow and concern over their tragic situation under the Taliban rule.”
He spoke about the Taliban's increasing restrictions on women and girls, describing them as a tragic manifestation of gender apartheid that aims to silence and erase women and girls from public life. He emphasized that every Afghan girl, like all girls worldwide, deserves the opportunity to learn and fulfill her potential.
Ambassador Soroosh thanked the government of Canada, friends of Afghanistan in Canada including the Right to Learn Afghanistan team, and our diaspora community for their sustained engagement and commitment in support of Afghan women and girls. He expressed hope that with continued collective efforts at an international level, the current trajectory in Afghanistan will be reversed, and the people of Afghanistan will have a future free from hostility and injustice toward women and girls, where all girls and boys have the right to learn and flourish in a peaceful and prosperous environment.

ANNOUNCEMENT
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Consular Section in Ottawa will be closed on Monday October 14, 2024, on the occasion of the Thanksgiving Day in Canada.
On September 26, 2024, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh participated and spoke in an event on women's empowerment and integration which was co-organized by the Afghan Women Parliamentarians and Leaders Network (AWPLN), Members of Parliament of Canada, and Amnesty International Canada in Ottawa.
The event was attended by high level officials from the Government of Canada, members of parliament, women’s rights activists, friends of Afghanistan and members of the Afghan diaspora community.
Ambassador Soroosh spoke about the current multifaceted crisis under the Taliban, increasing restrictions on Afghan women, and girls and various manifestations of gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
Ambassador Soroosh expressed his gratefulness to the government of Canada for co-leading a milestone initiative announced during the UN general assembly last week to take the Taliban to the International Court of Justice for their repressive and discriminatory actions against women.
He further thanked the government of Canada for all the previous and ongoing support for the people of Afghanistan particularly women and girls, and for implementing one of the largest resettlement programs at a global level for Afghanistan which includes the resettlement of many women leaders and women’s rights activists from Afghanistan in Canada.
Ambassador Soroosh stated that “the Afghan diaspora community continues to make important contributions to the broader Canadian society, and the newcomers from Afghanistan also bring valuable knowledge and experience and I hope that they will find deserving opportunities to actively contribute to the Canadian society.”
Ambassador Soroosh reiterated that “diaspora affairs remains an important priority for our embassy and consulates in Canada and we are committed to providing consular advice, support and services to our growing diaspora community in Canada….We also remain committed to working closely with all of you to further facilitate our collective efforts in support of the people of Afghanistan, and in addressing the needs of our diaspora community.
During the event, the results of a survey conducted by the Tulane University in collaboration with AWPLN on the challenges facing newcomers in Canada were shared.
OTTAWA: On September 25, 2024, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh participated as a speaker in a webinar on “Afghanistan’s Future: Interests of Local Actors and the International Community” which was organized by the Libertas Council.
Ambassador Soroosh spoke about the current situation in Afghanistan, the vast spectrum of non-Taliban Afghan stakeholders and the continued repressive actions by the Taliban against other Afghan stakeholders.
Ambassador Soroosh also spoke about the importance of a refocus on the UN assessment recommendations including the need for a renewed international approach and a roadmap that effectively responds to the current multifaceted crisis in Afghanistan.

The Coordination Council of the Diplomatic and Consular Missions of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Welcomes the Recent European Parliament Resolution on Afghanistan
OTTAWA: On September 18, 2024, the “Conference on Afghanistan: Changing the Approach and Reversing the Trajectory” was organized by the Center for International Policy Studies (CIPS), University of Ottawa in collaboration with the Embassy of Afghanistan in Ottawa.
The conference brought together Afghan, Canadian and international experts who discussed various aspects of the current situation in Afghanistan as well as the need for a renewed and integrated international approach to Afghanistan. The Conference included three panel discussions around key topics of humanitarian crisis, human rights situation, political process and counterterrorism.
The opening session included Introductory Remarks by Dr. Faramarz Tamanna, Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate at CIPS; opening remarks by Professor Alexandra Gheciu, CIPS Director, and Ambassador Hassan Soroosh, Ambassador of Afghanistan to Canada followed by a keynote speech by Hon. Pam Damoff, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada.
