Ambassador Soroosh attended the groundbreaking ceremony marking the launch of the construction phase of the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan in Ottawa

On May 04, 2026, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh attended the groundbreaking ceremony marking the launch of the construction phase of the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan in Ottawa.

The event brought together participants from the government, the veterans’ community and organizations, youth representatives, CAF personnel, and members of the diplomatic community.

On this occasion, Ambassador Soroosh wrote on X that “this monument will carry profound meaning for generations to come, serving as a lasting tribute to the brave Canadian women and men who served in Afghanistan, and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice alongside courageous Afghan forces in defence of our shared values. Their sacrifices represent a shared legacy grounded in the principles that continue to inspire our collective efforts to support the rights and aspirations of the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls.”

He added that “we remain deeply grateful to the Government of Canada and to all friends of Afghanistan in Canada for their enduring friendship and partnership with the Afghan people, as well as for their continued humanitarian assistance and steadfast advocacy particularly for women and girls.”

AMBASSADOR SOROOSH PARTICIPATED IN “Women’s Access to Justice in Afghanistan,” EVENT

On April 30, 2026, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh participated in “Women’s Access to Justice in Afghanistan,” event organized by the Women and Children Research and Advocacy Network (WCRAN) in collaboration with the University of Toronto’s Centre for European and Eurasian Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. The event presented findings and recommendations from WCRAN’s latest research on women’s access to justice in Afghanistan, conducted between late 2025 and early 2026.

Ambassador Soroosh and other speakers addressed different layers of gender apartheid in Afghanistan, including the systematic erosion of women’s access to justice. The Ambassador thanked WCRAN for its continued research and advocacy for Afghan women and girls, and stressed the urgent need for coordinated international pressure on the Taliban to reverse policies denying women their fundamental rights, tied to clear human rights benchmarks.

He emphasized expanding support for monitoring and documentation, noting that strengthening the capacity of local and international actors to gather and preserve evidence is essential for both current advocacy and future accountability.

He also called for more effective use of international mechanisms, including the ICC, ICJ, and the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Afghanistan, to ensure violations are documented and prosecuted where possible.

Finally, he underscored the importance of sustained support for women-led initiatives, recognizing Afghan women’s organizations as central to documenting abuses, providing services, and building resilience.

Ambassador Soroosh expressed gratitude to the Government of Canada for its principled, human rights–centered approach and ongoing resettlement, humanitarian, and advocacy support for the people of Afghanistan, especially women and girls.

On April 22, 2026, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh delivered remarks at the opening of a one-day conference "Envisioning Afghanistan’s Future", organized by the Ottawa Consultative Process (OCP) in collaboration with the Center for International Policy Studies (CIPS) at the University of Ottawa.

The conference brought together scholars, friends of Afghanistan, leading advocates, community leaders, students, and youth activists.

In their remarks, the Ambassador and other speakers addressed the current situation in Afghanistan, reflected on lessons learned, and emphasized the importance of developing a shared narrative for the future of Afghanistan. They also highlighted the vital role of the diaspora including youth in shaping this vision.

Discussions further underscored the contribution of friends of Afghanistan in convening platforms for dialogue and strengthening a common framework grounded in human rights, inclusivity, and accountability.

OTTAWA: On March 27, 2026, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh attended the inauguration of the Afghan-Canada Youth Council in Toronto which brought together community leaders, activists, and young people from the community.

He expressed his appreciation to the Council’s leadership for undertaking such a meaningful and timely initiative, particularly for its strong emphasis on youth engagement.

In his remarks, the Ambassador highlighted youth empowerment as a cornerstone of any society’s long-term development strategy, noting that young people represent the most dynamic, energetic, and creative segment of our communities.

He added that when youth are guided with care and provided with meaningful opportunities, they become a powerful driving force behind innovation, resilience, and sustainable prosperity.

The Ambassador further emphasized that youth within the diaspora are not only valued and contributing members of Canadian society but also serve as vital bridges connecting the people of both countries.

Ottawa: On March 14, 2026, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh delivered remarks at an iftar event co-hosted by the Afghan Students’ Associations at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. The event brought together members of the community and friends of Afghanistan to support ongoing humanitarian relief efforts in Afghanistan.

In his remarks, the Ambassador highlighted the worsening humanitarian and human rights situation, emphasizing the increasing pressures faced by the people of Afghanistan. He noted that millions of families continue to struggle with food insecurity and limited access to essential services, while children, women, and the elderly endure extremely difficult living conditions, relying heavily on the support of fellow Afghans and the international community.

He further underscored that the presence of attendees was a powerful expression of compassion, and that every act of support contributes to bringing relief and hope to families facing immense challenges.

The Ambassador also expressed his sincere gratitude to the organizers for their continued commitment and active engagement in advancing advocacy and humanitarian relief efforts for Afghanistan.

Ottawa: On March 21, 2026, an event was hosted by the Afghanistan-Canada Council in collaboration with the City of Ottawa to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, Nowruz, and the New Year 1405.

In his brief remarks, Ambassador Hassan Soroosh spoke about the coincidence of Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz as two meaningful occasions that carry profound cultural and spiritual significance.

He expressed his gratitude to the Afghanistan-Canada Council for organizing this event, as well as other advocacy, cultural, and social programs that promote understanding and create meaningful opportunities for community engagement.

Ambassador Soroosh also expressed his appreciation to the City of Ottawa and Deputy Mayor David Hill for their continued support of community-based initiatives. He further expressed his hope that this strong collaboration will continue to grow in the years ahead.
